Urban Escape

Thermal baths adaptation from concrete silos

Project Type

Adaptive reuse, Mixed-use, Wellness

A bustling city like Chicago needs pockets of nature that create peaceful escapes. Curved concrete pathways spark a sense of exploration and adventure. Planting lush trees and plants not only form a buffer from the noisy traffic on Halsted Street, but also inspired dappled-light elements throughout the interiors. The concept was derived by a first experience with the site. The project takes in programming from its surroundings, developing a place of cleansing, growing, learning, and healing.

Project Location

Chicago, Illinois

Project Year

Master of Architecture, School of the Art Institute of Chicago - 2021

This project aims to be a continuation of the site and the nature of its environment where it welcomes organic forms. It becomes a representation of the harmonious connection between human and nature.

The silos contain vertical farming, hot baths, cold baths, saunas, steam rooms, aromatherapy, and cryotherapy throughout the upper floors for a relaxing experience. For a more adventurous experience, swimming and diving pools can be found on the ground floor. Unwind at the rooftop pool and bar taking in views of the Chicago skyline.
